The founders
Previously co-founded FreeCharge, which was acquired by Snapdeal in 2015. A philosophy graduate known for consumer-behaviour insights.
The story
Kunal Shah started CRED in 2018 with an unusual idea: instead of chasing every Indian, build for the small group with good credit scores who reliably pay their credit card bills — and reward them for it.
Members paid card bills through the app and earned coins and rewards. Entry was limited to people above a credit-score threshold, which made the product feel exclusive and gave CRED a uniquely trustworthy, high-spending audience.
Shah’s track record let CRED raise large rounds early and spend boldly on brand — including memorable cricket-season TV campaigns. In April 2021 a $215 million Series D led by Falcon Edge and Coatue valued CRED at $2.2 billion.

The methods that worked
Pick a valuable niche, not the whole market
Creditworthy, high-spending users are a small share of India but a large share of financial value — attractive to banks and brands.
Exclusivity as a growth engine
A score threshold made membership aspirational and kept the community’s quality high.
Founder credibility to fund patience
A previous successful exit made investors willing to fund user growth before monetisation was proven.
Brand as a moat
Distinctive, humorous campaigns made CRED widely known far beyond its member base.
The hard parts
- Turning a loyal audience into sustainable revenue took time and multiple experiments.
- Reward-led engagement is expensive; the company reported large losses in its early years.
Lessons for Indian founders
- Who your customer is can matter more than how many customers you have.
- Trust and audience quality are assets you can monetise in many ways later.
- Big brand spends work best when the product already delivers a clear benefit.
Conclusion
CRED is a case study in audience-first building: own a high-trust community, then layer financial products on top.
