The founders

Alakh PandeyFounder & CEO

Physics teacher who left engineering studies to teach; started a YouTube channel in 2016.

Prateek MaheshwariCo-founder

Tech entrepreneur who joined to build the app and platform.

The story

Alakh Pandey began teaching physics on YouTube in 2016 from Prayagraj, aiming at students preparing for JEE and NEET who could not afford expensive coaching. His energetic, relatable teaching built a loyal following.

In 2020 he and Prateek Maheshwari launched an app offering full courses at a fraction of typical coaching fees. Because students already trusted Pandey, PhysicsWallah grew with almost no paid marketing — and largely without outside capital.

In June 2022, its first major external round — $100 million led by WestBridge Capital and GSV Ventures — valued the company at $1.1 billion. It became a unicorn at a time when many edtech companies were cutting back. In November 2025 it listed on the stock exchanges.

The methods that worked

1

Build the audience first

Years of free YouTube teaching created trust and demand before a paid product existed.

2

Price for the many

Affordable courses opened a market of students that premium coaching ignored.

3

Capital efficiency

Growing on revenue meant PhysicsWallah raised from a position of strength — on its own terms.

4

Founder-led brand

Students followed a person they trusted, which kept customer acquisition costs very low.

The hard parts

Lessons for Indian founders

Conclusion

PhysicsWallah proves that a trusted voice plus a fair price can beat heavily funded competitors — and that you don’t need to raise early to raise big.

Status: Listed on NSE/BSE since 18 Nov 2025.
