The story
In congested Indian cities, a two-wheeler is often the fastest and cheapest way to move. Rapido launched in 2015 as a bike-taxi app — a service big ride-hailing players had largely ignored.
The early years were hard: fundraising was difficult and the founders reportedly faced many rejections. Rapido kept prices low, focused on smaller cities and commuters, then added auto-rickshaws, cabs and deliveries using the same driver network.
A key change was offering drivers a subscription model instead of charging a commission on every ride. In September 2024, a $200 million Series E led by WestBridge Capital valued Rapido at $1.1 billion — almost nine years after launch.

The methods that worked
Serve the overlooked segment
Bike taxis met the needs of budget commuters that premium cabs priced out.
Persistence through slow years
Survived years of difficult fundraising by staying lean and focused on usage.
Reuse the network
The same drivers and app expanded into autos, cabs and deliveries.
Rethink the business model
Subscription plans for drivers made earning more predictable and attracted supply.
The hard parts
- Bike-taxi rules differ by state, creating regulatory uncertainty.
- Competing with large global and Indian ride-hailing companies.
Lessons for Indian founders
- Unicorns can take a decade — survival is a strategy.
- The cheapest option for the most people can be a giant market.
- Changing how you charge can unlock growth without changing the product.
Conclusion
Rapido is the anti-overnight-success story: a long, lean grind and a smart business-model change turned a niche into a unicorn.
