How to get your first 100 customers

The first 100 customers come from hustle, not ads. Founder-led sales, communities, partnerships and doing things that don't scale.

Your first 100 customers rarely come from paid ads. They come from founders doing things that don’t scale: personal outreach, communities, partnerships and obsessive customer care.

1. Start with your list

Write down 100 specific people or businesses who have the problem. Use your interview contacts, waitlist, LinkedIn connections, alumni networks, family business contacts and local markets. Next to each name, write how you’ll reach them.

2. Founder-led outreach

Send short, personal messages:

“Hi Ramesh, I spoke to 30 pharmacy owners in Pune who lose stock to expiry. We built a simple tool that sends reminders 60 days before expiry. Could I show you in 10 minutes this week?”

Specific, short and about their problem. Follow up twice. Expect most to ignore you. That’s normal.

3. Go where customers already gather

  • Communities: WhatsApp and Telegram groups, Reddit, LinkedIn groups, Discord servers, college clubs, trade associations.
  • Offline: markets, trade fairs, apartment societies, campuses. Rapido’s early growth relied on getting riders and commuters onto the platform city by city.
  • Content: answer questions where people ask them. PhysicsWallah’s YouTube teaching built trust long before the app.

4. Borrow distribution

Partner with someone who already has your customers: distributors, software vendors, banks, associations, influencers. Meesho grew by empowering resellers who already had social networks.

5. Make early customers love you

  • Onboard them personally.
  • Fix their issues the same day.
  • Ask for feedback weekly.
  • Turn happy customers into testimonials, case studies and referrals.

6. Track it like a funnel

Contacted → replied → demo or trial → paid → retained. Your conversion rates at each step tell you where to improve.

Your takeaway

Write your 100-name list today and contact 20 people this week. Next: the marketing channels that can scale beyond your first 100.
