There’s no single “right” way to fund a startup. The best source depends on your business model, growth ambitions and how much control you want to keep. See our full funding & government schemes guide for details and official links.

Government support (verify current terms)
- Startup India Seed Fund Scheme: support through selected incubators for proof of concept, prototypes and market entry, for DPIIT-recognised startups.
- Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups: guarantees on loans to eligible startups from member lenders.
- Fund of Funds for Startups: the government invests in SEBI-registered funds, which invest in startups.
- MUDRA loans for micro enterprises, PMEGP subsidies for new micro units, Stand-Up India loans for SC/ST and women entrepreneurs, and CGTMSE collateral-free credit for MSMEs.
- State startup policies often offer grants, rent support and incentives.
How to choose
- Can you grow profitably on revenue? Bootstrapping keeps control. Raise later from a position of strength.
- Do you need capital before revenue (deep tech, manufacturing, marketplaces)? Combine grants, angels and VCs.
- Do you have assets or steady revenue? Debt is cheaper than equity.
- Do you want to build a ₹1,000 crore+ company fast? Venture capital may fit, but understand what investors expect (next chapter).
Rapido and PhysicsWallah show two very different paths. Rapido raised repeatedly through years of hard growth. PhysicsWallah grew for years before taking its first major outside round.
Your takeaway
Match the money to the model. Every rupee of equity you sell early is the most expensive rupee you’ll ever raise. Next: how funding rounds work.
